PATRIOTIC IMAGES

Loyal Americans have celebrated their heritage of freedom with patriotic images through art, verse and song throughout the history of this nation.

In honor of our Independence Day, the 4th of July, we present here a sampling of patriotic photographs including our graphic art of the US flag and our original photography of the twin towers.

You will also find lyrics for some of America's most famous patriotic songs.

My Country 'Tis Of Thee

Words: Samuel F. Smith, 1832

My country, ’tis of thee,

Sweet land of liberty,

Of thee I sing;

Land where my fathers died,

Land of the pilgrims’ pride,

From every mountainside,

Let freedom ring!

VERSE 2

My native country, thee, Land of the noble free, Thy name I love; I love thy rocks and rills, Thy woods and templed hills; My heart with rapture thrills, Like that above.

VERSE 3

Let music swell the breeze, And ring from all the trees, Sweet freedom’s song; Let mortal tongues awake; Let all that breathe partake; Let rocks their silence break, The sound prolong.

VERSE 4

Our fathers’ God, to Thee, Author of liberty, To Thee we sing; Long may our land be bright With freedom’s holy light; Protect us by Thy might, Great God, our King.

The Twin Towers

9-11-2001

Patriotic images stir our memories,

but we will never forget

where we were or what we were doing

on that day of infamy.

And, we will never forget

almost 3000 deaths and 6000 injured.

Nor will we ever forget the tragic

and horrific loss to all Americans

and any who love freedom.

Wikipedia relates the history of 9-11.

Statue of Liberty

Liberty comes at a cost. Freedom is not free!

The Statue of Liberty stands second only to the American Flag as one of our most visual patriotic images.

Liberty Enlightening the World

The Statue of Liberty Enlightening the World was a gift of friendship from the people of France to the people of the United States and is a universal symbol of freedom and democracy. The Statue of Liberty was dedicated on October 28, 1886, designated as a National Monument in 1924 and restored for her centennial on July 4, 1986. (NPS)

My Favorite Patriotic Image

Freedom Is Not Free

If my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then will I hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and will heal their land.

2 Chronicles 7:14

New International Version (©1984)

Freedom comes at a high cost.

There are many patriotic images, but this one reminds me of my husband's pictures of the rows of white crosses at Normandy, and of the sacrifices our father's and grandfather's made for our freedom.

GOD BLESS AMERICA

by Irving Berlin

While the storm clouds gather far across the sea,

Let us swear allegiance to a land that's free,

Let us all be grateful for a land so fair,

As we raise our voices in a solemn prayer.

God Bless America,

Land that I love.

Stand beside her, and guide her

Through the night with a light from above.

From the mountains, to the prairies,

To the oceans, white with foam

God bless America, My home sweet home.

HEROES

Greater love has no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends.

Jesus Christ

A hero is one who values the life of others over his own life. He may be our local policeman or fireman. He or she may be our son or daughter in Iraq or Afghanistan. He may have been our father or grandfather in Vietnam or Korea or Germany or Japan. Man or woman, young or old, they are our heroes.

What an honor to be chosen as a medic for President George W. Bush. Regardless of political views or affiliations it a great honor to be selected from all the medics in Maine to serve the President of these magnificent United States. We are very proud.

I created the Firehouse Collage in honor of my stepson, Tom Goehringer, Jr. who has been a fireman-medic for many years. He is a true hero.

Kurt Vonnegut said, "I can think of no more stirring symbol of man's humanity to man than a fire engine".

I included his quote on the fire fighter collage, and I can agree with it as long as the fire engine represents the fire fighters who put their lives on the line every time they enter a burning building or forest.

The patriotic images in my memory are the 343 firemen who died in the Twin Towers on September 11, 2001 trying above and beyond their duty to save lives. They are genuine heroes as are their brothers who lived.

Thinking of his fireman, son, Tom Sr. asked me to change the quote to read, "I can think of no more stirring symbol of man's humanity to man than a firefighter!" Amen! I have made the change on the final copy, a gift for Tom Jr.'s 50th birthday.

America The Beautiful - Poignant Patriotic Images In Verse and Song

Poignant Patriotic Images In Verse and Song

Words by Katharine Lee Bates,

Melody by Samuel Ward

O beautiful for spacious skies,

For amber waves of grain,

For purple mountain majesties

Above the fruited plain!

America! America!

God shed his grace on thee

And crown thy good with brotherhood

From sea to shining sea!

O beautiful for pilgrim feet

Whose stern impassioned stress

A thoroughfare of freedom beat

Across the wilderness!

America! America!

God mend thine every flaw,

Confirm thy soul in self-control,

Thy liberty in law!

O beautiful for heroes proved

In liberating strife.

Who more than self their country loved

And mercy more than life!

America! America!

May God thy gold refine

Till all success be nobleness

And every gain divine!

O beautiful for patriot dream

That sees beyond the years

Thine alabaster cities gleam

Undimmed by human tears!

America! America!

God shed his grace on thee

And crown thy good with brotherhood

From sea to shining sea!

The Battle Hymn of the Republic - replete with inspiring patriotic images.

by Julie Ward Howe

Mine eyes have seen the glory of the coming of the Lord:

He is trampling out the vintage where the grapes of wrath are stored;

He hath loosed the fateful lightning of His terrible swift sword:

His truth is marching on.

(Chorus)

Glory, glory, hallelujah!Glory, glory, hallelujah!Glory, glory, hallelujah! His truth is marching on

I have seen Him in the watch-fires of a hundred circling camps,

They have builded Him an altar in the evening dews and damps;

I can read His righteous sentence by the dim and flaring lamps:

His day is marching on.

(Chorus)

I have read a fiery gospel writ in burnished rows of steel:

"As ye deal with my condemners, so with you my grace shalldeal;

Let the Hero, born of woman, crush the serpent with His heel,

Since God is marching on."

(Chorus)

He has sounded forth the trumpet that shall never call retreat;

He is sifting out the hearts of men before His judgment-seat:

Oh, be swift, my soul, to answer Him! be jubilant, my feet!

Our God is marching on.

(Chorus)

In the beauty of the lilies Christ was born across the sea,

With a glory in His bosom that transfigures you and me:

As He died to make men holy, let us die to make men free,

While God is marching on.

(Chorus)

He is coming like the glory of the morning on the wave,

He is wisdom to the mighty, He is succour to the brave,

So the world shall be His footstool, and the soul of Time His slave,

Our God is marching on.

(Chorus)
