Contemporary Masters of Photography
Richard Bickel - Florida Photography Photojournalist
Richard Bickel is one of America's contemporary masters of photography.

Richard's journey into photography art began with a simple Instamatic camera. Born and raised in Philadelphia, Richard traveled through 70 different nations as a photo journalist including over a dozen visits to Castro's Cuba. In the 1990's, however, he chose to open his photography art gallery and settle in historic and engagingly scenic, Apalachicola, Florida.
Apalachicola located on the Florida Panhandle, is one of the state's hidden treasures.
Masters of Photography Have Credentials!
Although his candid photos of people and exquisite photographs of nature have been included in such publications as National Geographic Books, Travel and Leisure, Stern (Germany), Geo (France), Civilization Magazine, The Los Angeles Times Magazine and Islands, Richard discovered in Apalachicola both the pathos and excitement he desired to compliment his talent.
The artistic photography of Richard Bickel follows the well worn 'photo-steps' of one of the masters of photography,
Henri Cartier Bresson, known as the Father of Photojournalism.

Atlanta Journal-Constitution Calls Richard's Photos "Mesmerizing"
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution called Richard Bickel's photo essay of Apalachicola Bay "mesmerizing ... capturing the power of sea and sky," while it added "He has chronicled the ebb and flow of life in this region with the eye of an artist." "This is Florida's last great working waterfront," says Bickel of Apalachicola, "where a people and a way of life are in peril. Photographers have the unique opportunity to show others what is here; hopefully these images will foster an awareness that will help protect our fragile waters." Richard Bickel has been a recipient of a number of awards including the Golden Quill for Photography and The New York Art Directors Club Award. Corbis, a digital archive of art and photography owned by Bill Gates...has included over 3000 of Bickel's images in their collection. Selected excerpts from BAYLIGHT, 1999

Richard's Advice And Quotes from the Waterkeepers Alliance
Richard shoots primarily black and white and "always film" (he says he's a "dinosaur"). The picture above of children swinging over the river is our favorite Apalachicola photograph. There is so much life in it! When I asked him how he gets his un-posed, candid photos of people, he answered, "Be bold".
ROBERT F. KENNEDY, JR., President, Waterkeepers Alliance says of Bickel's extraordinary photography, "Richard Bickel's insightful photographs show us the Florida no one knows.
"Through haunting visual poetry, we are given rare entry into the lustrous world of Apalachicola Bay and its people - and a Florida that is vanishing. "The mysterious water and its "water men and women" -- fishers and shrimpers, oyster shuckers and boat builders, and marvelous shore-side eccentrics -- all shimmer and sing to us through images that Bickel composed...." "Using his skills as an international photojournalist and his intense affection for Old Florida, he forges a new, almost mythical style of landscape imagery. "Bickel's bay seduces us with super-rich scenes of the enigmatic Florida native, his loyalty to family and the land, his jubilance at a watery horizon, and fear at the sight of yet one more beach condo.
"And above all, his despair that he may one day lose this last great Bay.
"Bickel's images of man at play and work on Apalachicola Bay beautifully illustrate the deep and lasting role our waterways have played in the development of the human spirit."
